On Perception of Reality

Conscious and Unconscious Beliefs

Core beliefs or strong ideas about your own existence are usually unconscious.

It is easier to see these in others than in yourself.

You look for proof in the world to validate your beliefs.

They can be negative or positive

Example: we cannot trust others. I have poor health

People are evil.

Or joyful beliefs: It all works out for the best. Life is mostly good.

What are some others?

Our conscious beliefs emerge from these Core ones. Conscious beliefs are easy to think of. She doesn’t like me; I can’t get ahead. I’m stuck in a job I don’t like. The world is going crazy, I’ll get sick, etc.

You can list these small beliefs, good and bad.

If we dig deeper, we can find the Core beliefs beneath these. We’re putting sunlight on them. Sunlight is a metaphor because it is nature’s sanitizer.

Dreams often foretell core themes, such as floods and danger, fights, your beliefs about the world, or the visitation of loved ones and family closeness, among others. These are relatively unconscious.

A challenge, if you’re up to it, is to discover your core beliefs.

Make a list, first, of your beliefs that you are aware of. You can see them easily, politically, judgments of others, and things you tell yourself all day. After you’ve made this list, set up categories on paper. Beliefs about life, health, and aging, for instance. Beliefs about humans, spiritual life, culture, government, your work, your family, your friends, and yourself.

Place these conscious beliefs under their categories. Then take a good look at them. Can you now see the commonalities in each list? This underlying belief is a core belief, such as ‘we are all unsafe,’ ‘people will take advantage of me,’ ‘I can’t ever have wealth,’ and ‘the future is foreboding.’ Until you are aware of it, you are ruled by it. It changes your perception of everything around you and inside you.

By bringing this into your awareness, you’ve removed the energy of it. You see its falseness. You can’t be ruled by it anymore.

Move into the space of openness, non-judgment, curiosity, and wonder.
