Aging Gracefully

The topic of our last meditation group meeting was Aging Gracefully. Here are some points from that discussion:

Every function: organization, metabolism, reproduction, digestion, elimination, etc., is operating for your optimal balance, or homeostasis.

All these simultaneous functions are an activity of the universe.

According to Ayurveda, imbalance leads to eventual illness.

As we age, it’s highly beneficial to flow with the universal rhythm of nature because we are a part of it.

Our biological functions ebb and flow with the tides of nature.

In tune, we experience vitality & joy. Out of sync, we notice mental or physical distress.

What we metabolize ineffectively causes an imbalance of the doshas. Some may be:

  • Toxins in the environment
  • Low quality foods
  • Unmetabolized emotions
  • Traumas
  • Stress
  • Poor sleep
  • Poor elimination

Our physiology metabolizes time, and we can experience timeless awareness through contemplation, meditation, and self-reflection.

The opposite is time-bound awareness, in which time is poorly metabolized and its lingering effects accelerate the aging process.

To Eliminate Residual Influences of Time

Difference between pain and suffering

Pain that we fail to acknowledge, we do not embrace, will become suffering.

Pain that is not confronted, embraced, and released:

  • Anger and Hostility is pain held onto
  • Anticipation of similar future pain is anxiety and fear
  • Pain that we are unable to forgive may be directed inward as guilt
  • The energy we expend to hold this pain depletes our life force and results in depression

Walk barefoot on the earth daily

Walk along the water’s edge

Allow the light & warmth of the sun to permeate you

Take a walk near abundant vegetation, inhale deeply just before dawn or shortly after sunset.

Gaze at the stars

Ignore the Cultural Messages coming from society, media, or any source telling you that your life will be somehow ‘less’ because of your age.

Find your Courage. You must be fierce and bold to age gracefully. And do not ever give up. You are a magnificent, absolutely amazing, and unique being, the likes of which have never, ever been seen before. Reach down deep within, and all the riches in life are there for you.
