An interesting subject is the definition of class. The prevailing beliefs on this subject are quite diverse and interesting. I’m not talking about the sociological system of divisions in which people are ranked according to level of income, education, or even neighborhood of residence. I’m discussing the intangible quality that we mean when we say someone has “class”.
My parents taught me a definition of class that I feel is the most valid. Over the years of my childhood, the sense of what class is was formed by their example and words. Both parents told me that having class means making those around you feel comfortable. I like that.
I also think that when someone has class, there is an air of elegance about them, but not one of aloofness. An approachability that transcends groups of people, from laborers to the highest-compensated individuals. It is a part of one’s character that takes effort to develop. When someone with this quality has spoken to you, when they walk away, you feel they respect you and your ideas, thereby earning themselves respect in your eyes. And you think, how nice.
People with class take you at your word, without cynicism. They treat you with understanding and are non-confrontational if, in fact, they disagree. A person with class may disagree with you in a tactful way that will leave no hurt feelings.
A person of class has no ulterior motives in their dealings; they can be trusted to be true to their word in both business and in their personal life.
To suppose that class is something you attain by simply reaching a degree of education or a certain level of income is missing the mark. It takes a self-imposed education in ethics and introspection to become aware of what is important in relating to others and how you are perceived. Class is the calm assurance that is the fruit of these efforts.
As in any goal, that which you give your attention to and that which you open yourself up to can change your life. Anyone can develop the grace that we call ‘class’.
