Ayurveda is holistic science based on the fact that we are holistic beings, mind, body and spirit, totally interconnected with ourselves and the universe. We are influenced by the cycles of the environment within and without ourselves. The rishis taught that to maintain vital health we must be in balance with all the rhythms of nature. After all, we are a part of nature, something that is easy to forget in our modern world.
Along with the health recommendations, (physical, mental and spiritual) a whole philosophy was created that spawned more bodies of knowledge found in the ancient Tibetan and Chinese medicines and other Asian healing modalities. These can be traced back to Ayurveda! Since that time the body of information has been continually refined so that it is totally appropriate for our modern day. In fact we find it increasingly integrated into western medical schools as part of the curriculum.
It is very subtle. Unlike our modern medicine that can cause dramatic changes in someone’s condition, the Ayurvedic recommendations are added to one’s lifestyle and create health from the inside out, with the purpose of going directly the root cause.
If someone is undergoing treatment for a serious ailment, Ayurveda can be of great value as complimentary care. But the best use of this art is in the prevention of disease by bringing the mind and body of the person into alignment with the perfect health we were intended to enjoy. Some of it is common sense, some of it may sound foreign to you, but once you begin looking into Ayurveda you will develop a new comfort with your self-care. You will finally understand your natural inclinations and what they have been telling you! You will be taking responsibility for your own well being. Through all of the years of study under Drs. Deepak Chopra and David Simon I can vouch for the great power of even small changes in your lifestyle and how they can return you to vibrant health, weight maintenance and total well being, no matter what your age.
